Mr. Lackey,
Thanks for
taking my call today. You can read up on
the project through the website: www.vietnamwallexperience.com
We are trying
to get all of the services involved in this event and feel that CPOA would be a
great avenue to reach out to the Coast Guard community.
The
"Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall" will be coming to Kitsap County
again. The 3/4 scale replica will be set
up for three days (July 13-15). It will
be placed at a site on the Miller-Woodlawn Cemetery in Bremerton. This will be a free community event which
will be open to the public 24 hours a day and will include guest speakers,
military events and various religious, musical and veterans programs.
The staff at
Miller-Woodlawn has started to set up the following committees:
1. Publicity
Committee - responsible for promoting event to members in the community and the
media.
2. Programs
and Ceremonies Committee - responsible for recruiting guest speakers and
planning/coordinating various religious, musical and veterans programs.
3. Safety
Committee - responsible for coordinating grounds security, first aid stations,
emergency plans, police personnel assistance, on-site traffic control, and
transportation for the handicapped and elderly.
This committee should also develop master parking and traffic plans and
arrange for shuttle parking.
4. Ground Site
Construction - responsible for selecting the proper site at Miller Woodlawn,
securing proper lighting, building the runner foundation, unloading,
installing, and reloading the WALL into the truck. Additional tasks may include landscaping,
seating, stage and tent setup.
5. Hospitality
Committee - responsible for helping visitors locate names on The Wall,
gathering mementos left at the Wall, organizing litter patrols, providing water
to those in need, providing food and beverages for volunteers, assisting guest
speakers and other VIPs. Overall
volunteer coordination may fall under this committee.
6.
Accounting/Fundraising Committee - responsible for spearheading solicitation of
donations within the community, issue receipts and thank you notes to donors,
track all monetary and in-kind contributions, document all Wall expenses, and
assist in submitting an activity report two weeks after the event. Also, responsible for establishing relationship
with local organization having 501c3 status.
7. Motorcycle
Committee - responsible for recruiting riders and coordinating a motorcycle
escort to bring the truck that transports the Wall into town. Coordination of the route, working with
local/state law enforcement, work with Publicity Comm. to attract media, and
work with Hospitality Comm. to feed participants.
If you of you
or the members of your organization are interested in assisting on any of these
committees or in getting the word out, please contact me at (206) 953-6026 or
