Seasons Greetings from the Seattle Chapter of the Chief Petty Officers Association,
Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association hosts Stairs for Turkey Fundraiser
By: Crescentia Tso
Let the festivity of giving begin! Every November the Seattle Chapter of the Chief Petty Officers Association (CPOA) hosts their annual Stairs for Turkey holiday fundraiser, to assist Coast Guard families by providing a fifty dollar gift card to local super markets. “The proceeds from the fundraisers allow us to assist Coast Guard members and their families during the holiday season,” said Master Chief David Hoover President of CPOA. “The fundraisers also give members a chance to get involved and have fun with it.” The Seattle Chapter organizes many fundraisers throughout the year such as barbecues and raffles. The proceeds from the fundraisers go toward support programs for Coast Guard members and their families. “The annual stairs for turkey event is a great contributor to the association. All the earnings go toward purchasing gift cards and some of the money is set aside for urgent cash assistance to help Coast Guard families when unexpected happenings occur,” Hoover said. This year Capt William Belmondo and Chief Joel Rodda both volunteered to climb an estimated 200 flights of stairs in the CDR Raymond J. Evans Shore Ops Building. Coast Guard members and civilian employees had the option to sponsor either Belmondo or Rodda for a mere penny a step, or a dollar each time they reached the roof. The choice of donating any amount of money was also available. “The event was a resounding success, throughout the climb both Capt Belmondo and I kept a brisk pace and talked the entire time so it went by fairly quickly. Both Senior Chief Holcomb and Chief Simon kept count of the steps and Senior Chief Koons stopped by to take some pictures,” said Rodda. “Along with funds left over from last year, we will be able to assist 30 local Coast Guard families this holiday season.” Coast Guard families recommended will receive a fifty dollar gift card to a local super market, where they are able to spend it as they wish. As CPOA members conclude their successful event and begin preparing for upcoming fundraisers, others like Rodda prepare to participate in next years stair climb. “I hope to do the Stairs for Turkey fundraiser again next year, unless I'm underway on the Cutter Healy or someone else volunteers. Even then, I will still help out” said Rodda.
The Seattle Chapter emailed notices about the available gift cards, to the local Chief’s Messes and people who donated to the fundraiser. The email encouraged everyone to notify their Command Master Chief or a Seattle Chapter CPOA officer to recommend a junior member that could use the extra hand this season. The Seattle Chapter will continue to accept donations throughout the holiday season. Individuals interested in contributing to the organization can mail donations to: Seattle Chapter CPOA, PO Box 84726 Seattle, WA 98124.
